The eternal struggle for no "mushroom head" is real! The Skid Lid Original is the smallest DOT helmet I've ever experienced, it is a definite move in the right direction against mushroom head, still a little but very little. The reason for the 3 stars is that they really have skimped on some things, like a removable liner. If you've ever worn a motorcycle helmet in SE Texas during the middle 7 months of the year you come to appreciate a removable, washable liner! But there's hardly any padding in the helmet so it should be ok just rinsing out and drying, hopefully. Another thing is there's no snap in the strap end! So either tuck the strap end under your chin or glue some velcro to it to keep it from flapping around at speed. Also the straps are lop-sided, the one on the left side the triangle is longer than my ear, on the right side the triangle only goes down halfway down my ear! It looks ridiculous but I guess it doesn't adversely affect anything. All in all this is a pretty good helmet for the price (Amazon price!), relatively comfortable (I have a big, XXL, and oval head) and hopefully the foam forms to my head better because it's a bit tight in front. It works really well on the bike, but there is definitely room for improvement. I wouldn't pay full price for it but at Amazon prices (or others online if you search) it's a good deal.
I had a Skid Lid a few years back that mysteriously disappeared from my bike. It fit fine with minimal "mushroom" head. My wife has a Street Steel that fits just as good: Comfortable, stays in place and has a low profile on her head. I bought this one thinking it would fit just as well. WRONG! It's obvious they added more padding to the crown which raises the helmet off your head. It also seems like they changed the strap geometry because when you tighten the chin strap, it shifts the whole helmet over. On most helmets, the D-ring is about level with the lowest part of the triangle on the other side. This one's about 2 inches off. Not at all a good fit.

Had I kept the box it came in (I'm still kicking myself), this would be going back and I would be on my way to a local shop to find one I liked. Unfortunately I'm stuck with it. At least until it disappears too.
I was disappointed in how high it sits because of the dot padding, but its alot better then others ive owned. I uselly go ful face so i look like a space man, with this its a lil mushroom. Anyone looking for NO mushroom effect will need to avoid DOT rated, and if your not wearing DOT WHY BOTHER. Sure you save your skull, but the impact with no padding can still cause brain damage. Ride safe, be safe, protect yourself. Buy dot.
Ok, the original flat black was what I wasn't looking for lol, but the size was dead on! So measure your head & skid lid sizes will fit just fine. Talked to the seller & they were absolutely awesome! Totally went out of their way to make me happy. As you can see in the pic the helmet does sit high but not as bad as the original flat black & this was the one I wanted in the 1st place. That being said, this being my 1st helmet & getting what I actually wanted I was willing to compromise with the medium set heiting on the head. Very comfortable in every way you def will not be disappointed by that in any way. If you're not looking for safety & looking for the novelty look you're not going to find it here. 1st day out & I've received at least 4 compliments.
Sorry I bought this one, it is not my first choice due to the way it sits on my head, it's like it has been lifted up about 2 inches. The other thing is the neck strap, can someone in the USA finally come up a way buckle the ends without having to fight for 15 minutes to remove the darn thing...? The LS2 helmets (pretty sure it's Italian) have a great way to buckle them but I guess we just don't want to spend the time or money on that.
This one will be sitting on the shelf and serve as a spare in case someone needs one. I will have to check that company to see if they make a good replacement for this style.

This will do, good enough for me and the short/moderate scooter trips I take.

Fit: Shape is an intermediate oval, so make sure you wouldn't be better suited with a round or long-oval shaped helmet. Right out of the box, the lining seems to be well made and is moderately comfortable for what is a fairly heavy helmet. Also the XL runs true to size, manufacturer's sizing chart is accurate. Does it "mushroom"? Well, yes, but with an inch and a half of protective material all the way around, I don't know how a DOT helmet could look otherwise.

Seller: Shipped reasonably fast, only complaint is that the price tag on the helmet was held on with a cheap adhesive; peeling it off made a mess. Not a big deal on a white helmet but would be an eyesore on black. The "Skid Lid" sticker peeled off easily.
husband needed new helmet we dont really care for them in general but he is partial to the skid lid brand so here it is ,it is a nice glossy black nice this straps like he likes however i did have to order him his little quick release :) and he will be getting all of his stickers for it of course to break it in the only thing he wasnt to keen obout and reason for the 3 stars it has a little bit to much cushion for his liking which raises it to high off his head,i think he is just used to the old skool style but when i put this on i can barely feel it crushing all my 80's hair down so its a plus for me haha i think he will be ok once we get to riding again
There really isn't much else to say about it. It's light weight, I can wear it for long rides and it is still comfortable. Yes, there is a little bit of the mushroom head thing going, but you will get that with any DoT approved helmet. That being said, this is probably the most low profile helmet I have owned that is still DoT approved.
Helmet was exactly as described. Small enough to look cool, but DOT approved to offer protection. The only thing I would like to see is a snap to secure the tail of the chin strap, instead of tucking it. If you don't tuck it, it will smack you in the ear. I'm just being picky. Great helmet.
