Sena 10S-01D Motorcycle Bluetooth Headset Communication System (Dual Pack)

Sena 10S-01D Motorcycle Bluetooth Headset Communication System (Dual Pack)

Sena 10S-01D Motorcycle Bluetooth Headset Communication System (Dual Pack)

: Sena 10S-01D Motorcycle Bluetooth Headset Communication System (Dual Pack): Automotive

We're half way through a 1,600 mile trip with our new Sena 10S; using it for communication between two riders, and linked to our phones for directions and music. They worked as advertised, with good sound, clear intercom up to 70 mph, and intelligible much faster than that, and plenty of volume level. In fact, I would have rated them 5 stars, but then we encountered the first rain. We took care to ensure the charging port plug was in place. They worked fine during the rain storm, but problems developed immediately afterward, and continue to plague us two days later. Both units have given trouble. Random power offs, intercom not working or working intermittently, one unit's intercom working while the other's microphone not working. One speaker working, the other not working. Randomly going into pairing mode, group intercom, etc., without touching a button. Removing and reattaching the unit from the base plate often changes what is not working, but does not fix the problems. Yes, we're powered on and off, repaired, etc., but the problems persist. In my opinion, these units are not satisfactorily and I do not recommend purchasing.

Update - We've returned from the trip. One unit mostly recovered except for one speaker dropping out occasionally. The other unit charged up fine, but would not power on. I called SENA; they suggested a factory reset using the paperclip button hole. Oh gee, look at that. The paper clip hole sits out in front of the helmet bracket, open to water intrusion. No way these can be water resistant. Anyway, the reset did get the unit going, for a little while; it indicated full charge all functions worked great, until it started randomly powering itself off again. So it has not recovered. Wow, and I just noticed the price for the dual pack has jumped $80 in two weeks! What is up with that? These are NOT a good buy.
Pros:
- The 10S is easy to mount on the helmet. You can mount it in about 15 minutes.
- It has a very secure clamp for the unit itself and velcro sticky pads for the mike and speakers.
- The speakers sound very clear even at high speeds. There is no problem understanding what the other person is saying.
- Pairing is easy with other headsets as well as with a phone.
- You can talk to up to three other people simultaneously or individually (but I haven't tested this as I only have 2 units)
- Once you pair your phone, you can use Google Now (or Siri, I suppose) to get directions, place calls, play music, etc. And it works great!
- The unit has phone number presets, but Google Now is much easier to use.
- There is a built-in FM radio with presets.
- Battery life seems good. I've been using it with a single charge all this week (˜5 hours).
- Range is pretty decent.

Cons:
- You might have to reposition the speakers a few times until you get them to a comfortable position. They can keep your ears from "unfolding" into the ear wells.
- The velcro bond is stronger than the glue they used to attach the back piece of the mike and speakers. If you are not careful, the back will be ripped out of the speaker or mike.
- If you have to reposition a velcro pad it will probably break. The kit has spare microphone pads, but no spare speaker pads so you might have to buy a set separately.

Other:
- They come with firmware 1.0, but updating to 1.1 was pretty simple (you need a Mac or PC).
- The phone app is convenient for setting some preferences and looking at the documentation on the go, but it's not really necessary.
Brought the Sena 10s Dual pack.

WARNING: if you are going to install this on a half-helmet be warned that it might not work. You might need to modify, or you might need to buy the clamp for a Sena SPH-10H and try to install that way to your half-helmet. . The boom does not attach directly to the 10s housing! You will need to figure out a way to attach the boom mic directly to your helmet. I contacted Sena support and they said that the 10s is not recommended for half-helmets!

That being said, I was able to figure out a way to install the unit and use the boom mic on my half-helmet (Scorpion Exo 100). Installing it on my wife's 3/4 helmet was a breeze! Once I got the units installed I checked them out.

Using it for phone conversation. This thing is amazing!! I was using my half-helmet and was easily making calls right away on my first trip. I took it out on the Interstate to see if riding at 75+mph would cut down on the sound quality and/or push noise through to whoever I was talking with. I could hear the calls loud and clear and the people I was speaking with did not hear wind or road noise.

Pairing with your phone is a breeze. Upgrading the firmware is very easy. Pairing with the other unit for intercom was simple.

Bottom line, even though I was disappointed that this did not easily install on a half-helmet, I gave it 5-stars for its easy set up, great sound quality, and ease of use once on the road.
The good:
- Great intercom sound quality between me and another rider
- Bluetooth with music on phone sounds great
- Easy to adjust volume
- Radio presets easy to switch between
- Phone app makes programming radio stations easy

The bad:
- Radio stations fluctuate volume on their own, just enough to be slightly annoying. I can't hear it on talk radio stations.
- Difficult to switch to next song on bluetooth with gloves on
- Intercom can be finicky to turn connect
- Intercom range is very affected by terrain and trees
- Voice announcing things like "Intercom failed" or the radio station number can be painfully loud

It may seem like a lot of negatives, but having an intercom with my riding partner is still indispensable. Our Senas have their quirks, but it's invaluable to be able to tell your partner if you need a break, there's a pot hole, etc. Maybe we should have gone with the 20S model, but those were out of our price range. The 10S still gets the job done.
Has quirks and instructions basic. Had to go online to make necessary adjustments. When using GPS sound level starts low and gradually increases on its own. No way to set starting volume level. So you miss initial instructions. You have to be listening to music or something else in order to have proper sound level. No instructions on how to fix this problem.

Stellar product
Really good sound quality and covers a fair distance between bikes, would definitely recommend, not to bad to fit but probably depends a bit on your helmet.
Great product but still suffers with a few issues. I struggled to get speaker placement right for comfort and volume. Best quality is the intercom, volume is a little low even on max and struggle to hear speech clearly above 70mph. Still best one I've used compared to others. Would definitely recommend.
