My buddy & I bought these things, we both ride KTM 450EXC's. I was concerned that we may not be able to hear clearly over the engine/exhaust noise but it is not a problem. I only run the volume about 50% and hear him very clearly. In VOX mode, the exhaust from my bike does break squelch so I'm basically transmitting all the time but it's not a big deal. We did install the speakers and mic into our full face helmets which took about an hour and wasn't a bad job if your helmet has a removable lining. Battery life is great, we get a full day's operation out of a single charge.

I also run a GoPro camera under the visor on my helmet. I mounted one of the two speakers in the headliner near the camera so its mic picks up my buddy's voice so the camera records both sides of the conversation.

My only disappointment is they are pretty much line of sight operation. If we're in hilly or canyon country, the connection drops off pretty fast if we can't see each other. Straight-line, in-view reception is good out to at least 1/4mile. It also connects to my iPhone so I can listen to music and the fidelity is surprisingly good. There are a lot of other features that I haven't even tried yet. Overall, we are really happy with these units.
Bought this to communicate with my brother as we go for rides and got way more use out of it than I ever expected. Not sure how others are stating issues, because my brother and I have not expeierenced any of it. I've used it everyday since I bought it about 3 months ago, even updated the firmware when I first opened it. I listen to my music as I commute and get calls and use my phone GPS with no issues. I can't believe I rode so long before without this. The convenience to receive calls is just awesome and It's surprisingly clear with speaking into the mic and listening to the speakers. I've been riding at speeds ranging from 45 to 80 mph and can still maintain a conversation without issue. Can't say enough good things about this and don't feel like writing anymore than I already have. For the price of these two units you're getting an awesome product. Would buy another single unit for my wife to ride along with me.
I'm a fairly new rider. I've only had 1 helmet (Shoei GT-Air), and I've only used this bluetooth unit. So, I can't really offer a comparison helmet-to-helmet or bluetooth-to-bluetooth for this review. What I can say is that this bluetooth unit does about everything I could want, and does it well. I'm riding for work now, and put a LOT of time in the saddle for my job (approaching 3k miles, been less than a month since I got the bike), so I do feel like I can offer a good review for this product based on my usage and gear.

Installation:

Easy, easy, easy. Never installed any bluetooth or modified a motorcycle helmet in any way. I tried putting the velcro side of the speakers directly onto the ear pad of the helmet (they stick to the fabric with no trouble, nice and secure) but I didn't like the fit after a few hours of use in that way. The following morning I removed the padding that covers the ear cavity (pops right out, stuck 'em in a drawer where I have random motorcycle gear stuff in case I want them back in later) and used the velcro mountings that came with the Sena to install the speakers. Fits good, speakers sit right by my ears.

The main part of the unit can go just about anywhere you want on the left side, so figure out a good spot and stick it there. A lot of folks have said they got the battery on the inside of the helmet, but as I mentioned I'm gonna put a lot of hours on this thing so I'm going to leave mine mounted on the rear outside of the helmet so I can carry a couple extra charged batteries with me.

Finally the microphone. I haven't used the boom mic, figured I'd start with the other one. Stuck a piece of their mounting velcro in front of where my mouth goes in the helmet, stuck the mic to it, done.

Last but not least, all these wires. Basically, I unbuttoned the padding and neatly ran all the wires around until nothing was sticking out more than it needed to, but none of the wiring was stretched tight. Looks good! Very inconspicuous.

Sound:

Works great for voice. I've listened to audiobooks through it, phone calls sound good, turn-by-turn navigation from the phone is clear. Music however... well, there aren't a lot of really AWESOME sounding speakers for motorcycle helmets out there. If you're after some really nice sound you may want to get the adapter that lets you connect earphones to it and get a nice pair of ear buds. I appreciate great sound quality, but not enough to drop the convenience of the helmet-mounted speakers. IMHO this quality can be tolerated while riding.

What "THEY" hear:

Great. I've got a bluetooth stereo in my car that includes microphone, used it for a long time for work. It does an alright job, but I've had complaints that it sounds like I'm in a wind tunnel while I'm at highway speeds. Not so with the Sena! I would have thought on the motorcycle the noise would be even worse than in the car, but because of the positioning of the mic folks on the other end don't even know that I'm riding, even at high speed! The first night I used it I called my girlfriend while riding around. Even with the face shield open she couldn't hear that I was riding. I got to a highway on ramp and when the light turned green I went from 0 to 60 fairly quickly and she said "I kinda heard that a little". I've got a Honda VTX 1300, not what I'd call "stealthy" but certainly not the loudest.

Controls:

Pretty simple, takes some getting used to. You've got 3 buttons, + , -, and a center button in between the two. Everything's done by tapping the buttons or by press-and-hold for various lengths of time and in various combinations. I'd advise actually reading the instructions when it comes to this, because aside from tapping + and - to adjust volume, it's not intuitive and you will have to memorize some stuff. It's not hard, once you use it a handful of times you've got the hang of it.

Good luck on your quest for a bluetooth unit for your helmet. Keep the rubber side down folks!
Not sure if they still make these as last time I looked on the Sena website they had disappeared but you could still get them online.

Simple to install, simple to synchronise, good range, good intercom, good phone interface, sturdy, waterproof, aerodynamic, discreet, good battery life, USB micro - what's not to like? Maybe playing music through them is not the best, maybe you should be driving a car instead.

Whether you have a standard, flip or race-style helmet it's perfect - I have 3 of these.
Best thing i have ever bought for my bike. I use Earplugs with this and the sound is perfect me and my buddy can hear eachother up to 90mph with no probs. Battery lasts a long time and the range is great. Sleek design easy to use. Honestly best thing you will ever buy

July 2017 update!

ok so my bro has now got a super bike and we can talk to each other easy with this at speeds of lie 120mph easy. Battery life is still perfect, Sound and use and everything is still perfect.

We use this every time we go out. And if we are touring for more than 6-7 hours and need some juice we just use a battery pack to charge it.

BUY THIS IF YOU HAVE A BIKE. We honestly say to each other regally that this is one of the best things we have purchased.

Voice Prompt

Safety is a key factor when out on the road and Sena has integrated voice prompts into all of their units to ensure riders can maintain handsfree control. Voice prompts allow riders to operate functions such as GPS, volume control, mobile phone calls and more without needing to take their hands off of the handle bars. Sena provide voice prompt options for multi-language, English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. This is necessary to ensure safety is maintained during times of traffic or congestion.

Individual Adjustable Volume Profiles

You can easily decrease/increase the volume of the voice, music and intercom using Jog Dial. The SMH10R-01 can save volume levels of previously connected profiles. This means that phone volume (HSP/HFP), music volume (A2DP), and intercom volumes will be saved separately and return to its own saved volume level whenever associated profile is reconnected.

Profile volume adjustment is only affected during the use of its specific profile. However, when changing volume during standby mode, then volume change applies to all profiles. Alert tones like low battery warning and connection tones can only be adjusted in standby mode.

Easy Installation for Most Helmets

The SMH10R-01 will fit onto various types of helmets. The standard clamp, included in default packaging, will fit onto most helmets. For installations which may require extra wire length, ear buds instead of speakers, and wire microphone instead of boom microphone, Sena offers different types of clamps as an additional accessory (sold separately), to allow various installations and user preferences.

I love this! It's a great piece of equipment which is very usable. I fitted mine to Shoei NXR helmet and it fits nicely behind the lining without any discomfort or even really being visible at all. The battery lasts a good week of commuting 1.5 hours a day. The sound quality is good - I can hear clearly upto about 65 mph but above it gets a difficult. But slowing for the occasional phone call is acceptable and GPS directions are fairly limited on motorways anyway. The only real flaw is the buttons with a gloved hand - especially winter gloves. I have read that the SMH5 is better for this - but I have not owned one so cant comment.
I changed from the bigger 10 for the smaller size and would reccomend it. I don't think the range is quite as far or the battery life as long but, its compact, can be charged on the go and is just so unobtrusive. Ive used this with on a few long trips, Switzerland and 4500miles accros the USA with my buddies, also on sena, one the SM10 and one with the fancy Sena in helmet system for Schuberth. Sometimes the pairing was a pain and it can be frustrating but overall. Excellent
I ordered this from Amazon for a good price and I was not disappointed as I already used the SMH5 which is great too! this unit is much slimmer wit external battery fitted to rear of helmet and can be charged while riding (supplied cable) It has a very good menu system once you have got used to it and pairs easily with my Garmin, Phone (Motorola X ) and G it also pairs with more units for bike to bike comms. Very happy I got it. Thank you Amazon for quick delivery. Recommended
