As alot of people have said and been pretty blunt about... this is made to use only during the daylight hours.
During the night, every light has a rainbow star/ring type pattern. Pretty awesome if you like that sort of thing when riding through a downtown area with loads of lights - building lights, street lights, on-coming headlights, etc.
However.... I still choose to wear it because I can keep my lid shut, stay warm and can deal with the rainbows. Never fogged yet on me... and I've tried pretty hard. Ridden in sub-30 degree temps and no issue at all. I've not been able to try wet weather yet, but I'm sure it's flawless.
I wish they'd make the rainbows go away. I'd buy one for everyone I knew that had a helmet that fit it. It's really really nice to be able to keep the lid down.
Just enough smoke! Not too dark for night riding but just dark enough to protect me from the straight on sun in the a.m.
This thing is absolutely mandatory if you ride during winter. I'm not sure what kind of black magic is actually at work inside it, but it got completely rid of that fog that had been bothering me since the temperatures dropped.
Installation is pretty straightforward. Just make sure you don't touch the fog absorbing part with your fingers.
Also: make sure you're getting the right model for your helmet. For example, this fits a RF-1100, which has a CW-1 shield, but might not work on other helmets.
Light smoke is dark enough to allow your face to be unseen, but light transmission at night is less than ideal. It still is usable at night and early mornings. I can't seem to be able to get rid of a gap on the left side of the visor and helmet, it makes a bit of wind noise at speed. Visor fogs up when close to dew point, haven't bought the pin lock insert yet.

If you ride a motorcycle in rain or cold, pinlock keeps your shield from fogging. With one of these you can truly ride in any weather condition. This Shoei model is easy to install if you have the correct insert and works flawlessly.
I wear mine at night almost every day riding from work and it is not bad. I can see well enough and do not feel night time is too much of a problem. It will fog at stop lights on really cold nights (55) near the beach. It really is great during the day cutting the red out of the sunlight. At night it is not tinted enough to impair my visual reference. I think Shoei has added just enough tint to make it effective in bright sunlight and safe enough for riding at night.
