Maybe folks that are worried how they "look" should be doing fashion shows or designing clothes. It seems a significant % of the Harley crowd are worried about appearance first, then riding. I'm a rider with over 100k miles and 4 cross country trips. For too many years I was not so smart and I wore a "dot" brain bucket. The brain bucket was comfortable, but the wind noise and buffeting were high; still, I put up with it. After an accident, I was commanded by the boss not to ride - our dog died 6 weeks ago, and the "no ride" decision was reversed to deal with his loss. Last weekend I took a 200 mile scoot and realized the bucket would not cut it anymore. I bought this Bell helmet and since have been on a 60 mile highway ride and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Much less hectic now with less wind noise and buffeting (no windshield) and a smoother ride for my noggin. I don't care what I look like with the helmet on. This is an ideal helmet for old school riders that are used to brain buckets and want to get into a simple upgrade. It is comfortable! The quality is plenty good - I am able to sneak my shades on with the helmet on - I feel a little smarter for wearing a proper helmet. At 60, I'll take the protection and let others worry about how they look. This is a relative review though....if someone is going from a simple brain bucket to this Bell Custom 500, you will get an excellent improvement in wind noise and buffeting not to mention much better protection in case there is an accident.
So far this thing is awesome. I got this after I ordered 2 biltwell bonanza helmets and I'm glad I didn't settle for the bonanza because the 500 fits my head perfectly. Not to say the biltwell is bad quality, it was actually nearly as nice as the 500 but I would say the bell was of slightly higher quality, but not by much. My head is slightly oblong and the biltwell bonanza is for more of a round head, so the medium was too wide but fit ok front to back, and the small was too short front to back but fit ok in width. The Bell 500 in medium is just right. I would say if you're between sizes definitely get the larger of the two. I prefer a snug fit and usually wear a larger small or a smaller medium and buy based on reviews from others.
I ended up getting the biltwell bubble smoke shield and it looks and fits absolutely awesome on the Bell! The setup is very light and the bubble shield offers a perfect field of view with no distortion whatsoever. You will be able to see anything and everything with this helmet, no blind spots. No issues on the freeway for me. It's nice and quiet at speed. No weird whistles or howls from air vents but just enough airflow coming in from under the shield. I live on Oahu and I was worried I'd get too hot, but as of now I am very satisfied :) Enjoy.
I currently have a Bell Bullitt, which I love. I ordered the Custom 500 as a knock around helmet. Ordered it in the same size, and the sizing was the same. However, the fit was not. The Bullitt has a nice plush interior, but the 500 felt like I was wearing a styrofoam cooler on my head. The padding was very thing. Then there was the huge bobblehead look. The pictures make the helmet look a lot slimmer. This thing is HUGE in real life. I ended up returning it.
Great look. Fits a bit big, Bell is a bit off on their sizing. a L squeezes my head until it hurts and an XL fits loose. It is a loud helmet, but that doesnt bother me. The only real issue I have is the loose bit of fabric on the inside can catch the wind and vibrate unmercifully.... That being said, I still really like the helmet.
5/4/15 **Update the fabric covering the cheek pads is splitting badly and you can not replace them. Had to down grad a star for that. Really bums me out as I love the look of the helmet, but its just got too many flaws.
I used the size chart and it indicated I needed a Medium. I ordered one, and it was far too small. I returned it and ordered a Large. It's still exceptionally small, to the point it's uncomfortable to wear. I chose Bell because of their reputation for high quality, and I was not disappointed in regards to the quality and construction of the helmet. But their sizing is insane. Buy much bigger than you think you'll need. I would almost rather ride without a helmet than wear this exceptionally small one. I wear glasses, and it rides too far down on my forehead to make wearing glasses comfortable. I want to keep "pushing it back" off my forehead.

Fantastic helmet, breathes well and is light. A little stiff at first but after 10 hours or so it breaks in nicely and is SUPER comfortable. The quality of the lining is top notch, as you would expect from Bell. Finish is flawless. Be sure to check the edge trim on the D-ring side, mine was a little scuffed up where the buckles rubbed on the helmet in-transit, but not a deal breaker. I personally elected to get the gloss finish so go-faster stickers will adhere.
The ear pockets are generous and lined with a Velcro friendly fabric, so the hook side of Velcro will grip firmly. I was able to mount some headphone drivers without too much difficulty.
I've worn it out on sunny 90º+ days and was perfectly comfortable in it. Also in chilly weather, still good.
My only complaint is that the snap on the end of the chin strap does not have a positive "snap" sound or feel when clicking in so you can't tell you've got a positive connection. It works fine, you just can't feel it snap connect.
I loved this when I got it and used it the first time. But now that it's warm with a little sweat it's leaking red die all over me. Looks like I'm in a horror movie. I've rinsed it in hot water for hours but It's still leaking red.
Sure wish I could get my money back since It's not going to be usable.
I have an older Bell helmet in a size small so I figured I would order the same size as it fits perfectly. Admittedly I did not measure my head cicumf. This helmet is so small, I can barely get it on/off, so back it has to go. I've heard good things about the Daytona helmets so will try one of those....
Addendum: August 31, 2020 Tried to return this and was 30 days over the 30 day time limit. I didnt realize there was a limit. I do think they should budge a little on this but.....
